Mouawad: Lebanon according to Taif Agreement or the Guardianship of the Jurist model?
Minister Nayla Mouawad said that strengthening the presidency and supporting President Michel Sleiman “is a national and Christian duty” because Lebanon needs a “president capable of restoring the role and the position of the presidency.”
Speaking after meeting with Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Sfeir, Mouawad said, “In his inaugural speech, the president drew the lines of a courageous and fundamental policy on important issues when he raised the problems surrounding Lebanese-Syrian relations, the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, the defensive strategy, illegitimate weapons, the right of immigrants to vote and the matter of Lebanese detainees in Syrian and Israeli prisons.”
“The core problem in Lebanon is Hezbollah’s weapons,” she added.
Mouawad stressed on the need to restrict weapons to the legitimate authorities of the state. “Do we want a Lebanon following the Taif Agreement, or Lebanon according to the Guardianship of the Jurist model? Do we want Lebanon as a ground or a country.”
