Geagea: There is no political life outside constitutional institutions

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea said that Hezbollah and Syria want the existing status quo in Lebanon to remain “because they consider the resistance much more important than the state.”

“There is no political life outside constitutional institutions, which are the essence of democratic systems in the free world,” Geagea said at a meeting with political science students from Harvard University in Maarab.

“We want to build a proper state in Lebanon,” he said. “The achievements that have been accomplished so far have been generated from the principles of the Cedar Revolution.”

Commenting on the incidents in Beirut early in May, Geagea said he never imagined that Hezbollah would direct its weapons against Beirut and added that it “undermined [Hezbollah’s] image as a national resistance.”

He also said that the Doha Agreement is the first official Arab document to describe Hezbollah as an armed group and not a resistance.

Geagea said that giving Hezbollah the obstructing third is not an important matter, “for the government will only prepare and manage the upcoming legislative elections.”
