Geagea: Aoun is resorting to blackmail
Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea said that any positive mood surrounding the political deadlock must be reflected on the ground, which he said he hopes will happen in the next few days.
“President Michel Sleiman is definitely unhappy with the delay in forming the cabinet,” Geagea told Al-Mustaqbal daily.
“MP Michel Aoun knows that the president is seeking the establishment of the government as soon as possible so he can start his term. This is why Aoun is trying to achieve as many gains as possible through blackmail,” he added.
Geagea said that Aoun’s maneuvering is aimed at either retaining his current supporters or attracting new ones.
He also noted how influential Syria and Iran are in Lebanon. “Both countries seem not to be displeased with the delay in forming the government as long as they are not held responsible, because they are putting Aoun on the frontline, the same way they did with the presidential elections” Geagea said.
“The government will be ultimately established, because neither Hezbollah nor Syria can bring down the Doha Agreement,” he said.
