Soueid: Syria “emerging from Lebanon and will not return to it again.”
March 14 General Secretariat Coordinator Fares Soueid on Saturday said he considered the new national unity government, which was announced just a day before President Michel Sleiman’s visit to Paris, a “real achievement in the construction of a Lebanese state.”
“Some wanted the president to go to France without a government, and to meet with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and after the meeting Syria would facilitate the formation of the government in order to be able to declare once again that the key to the solution in Lebanon is still in its hands,” he added.
Soueid, a former MP, said Friday’s achievement had proven to the world that Syria was “emerging from Lebanon and will not return to it again.”
“The Lebanese look to this government as a rescue government according to the Doha Agreement,” he added. Soueid added that the government must raise the serious issue of the relationship between the Lebanese Republic and all illegal weapons in Lebanon.
Soueid said there was no country in the world with the two armies and denounced the funding of a non-government armed group “from all over the world without any censorship.”
“There are those who see the forthcoming parliamentary elections will be the appropriate interval for changing the nature of Lebanon,” Soueid commented. The former MP questioned the the outcome elections when one Lebanese team possesses weapons and the other team “does not want to possess arms,” in reference to Hezbollah.
“There is one project for the salvation of Lebanon. In the past, the majority of the Lebanese united in the face of Syrian guardianship. Today, the majority must unite in the face of Wilayat al-Faqih [the Guardianship of the Jurist],” he concluded.
