Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Sfeir described the swap deal between Israel and Hezbollah as positive, but he added in an interview with Arabic weekly Al-Telegraph, “There should be one army, not two, within the state.”
Sfeir also said the meeting between President Michel Sleiman and his Syrian counterpart, Bashar al-Assad, was a good gesture “that must be continued.”
He wished the newly-established government success, saying that democracy means that there is a majority who rules and a minority who makes up the opposition.
“My statement over democracy was misinterpreted. We are not preaching democracy to anyone, but only expressing our point of view,” Sfeir said.
