Fouad Saad raises dossier of Lebanese detainees in Syria
MP Fouad Saad of the Democratic Gathering bloc welcomed the return of Lebanese prisoners from Israel, adding that he hoped this step was a sign of political detente in the region.
“On this occasion, we must ask about the fate of prisoners of war and missing persons and detainees in Syrian prisons, as their fate is still unknown,” Saad told the Central News Agency.
“I was responsible for this dossier for approximately two and a half years ago, and following a cabinet and in cooperation with a military and judicial committee, we worked on the issue in detail and submitted a report to Lebanese and Syrian officials – to no avail,” Saad said.
“No one intended to open the dossier at the time,” he added.
Saad said the dossier of missing persons in Syria should be raised during the talks between Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Mouallem and Lebanese President Michel Sleiman when the FM visited Beirut.
“There are no justifications yet for not entering into Lebanese-Israeli negotiations on all pending issues, leading to a full and comprehensive peace agreement on the liberation of all detainees, whether in Syria or Israel,” he concluded.
