Legislative elections require political and security stability

Interior Minister Ziad Baroud said that the task of the Ministry of Interior is not restricted to organizing and supervising legislative elections.

“I am determined to fulfill all the constitutional and legal functions I am entrusted with,” Minister Baroud told the Voice of Lebanon radio station.

“The parliament has not adopted yet the electoral law and is it possible to go by the law submitted by the independent commission. In this case the commission and not the Ministry of Interior will be responsible of the legislative elections,” he added.

Baroud said that the main objective of this government is to prepare and manage the legislative elections.

“However, we will not put other matters on hold, for the preparation for the legislative elections requires a stable security and political climate,” Baroud said while noting that the stability of the country is a primary matter.

Commenting on his visit to Tripoli, Baroud said it was his duty as minister of Interior to do so.

He also noted the cooperation between the Lebanese army and security forces following the instructions of President Michel Sleiman, Prime Minister Fouad Siniora and Defense Minister Elias Murr.

“A new security plan is being implemented in Tripoli.”
