Syrian authorities release four human rights activists

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights released a press communiqué reporting that Syrian authorities have discharged four human rights activists from prison.

Qais Ahmed Ali, who was arrested on April 2, 2008, was released along with Hamam Haddad, Barhouz Sharif Youssef and Hussein Mulla Ahmed, who were detained on May 5, 2008.

SOHR’s communiqué said that the men’s arrest and detention were a clear violation of their civil rights, which are guaranteed by the Syrian constitution and international conventions that Syria has ratified.

The group called on Syrian authorities to stop their policy of arbitrary detention of political, civil and human rights activists.

SOHR also called for the immediate and unconditional release of Professor Aref Dalila, the members of the National Council for the Damascus Declaration who are being detained, and all prisoners of conscience.
