Siniora’s press office denounces monopoly over national right to resistance

A statement issued Wednesday by Prime Minister Fouad Siniora ‘s press office denounced officials who had criticized the work of the committee in charge of drafting the ministerial statement.

Some officials had also accused the prime minister of being reluctant to include the word “Resistance” in the ministerial statement, according to the press office.

“These speeches are intended to divide the Lebanese people,” continued the statement, “and to create a tense atmosphere on the political level and through media which will influence the committee’s work.”

It went on to say that the committee was working seriously to stabilize the situation in Lebanon and help cooperation between Lebanese people on the basis of national partnership and democracy.

The statement expressed the view that Lebanon’s experiences had revealed that the country could not liberate its occupied territories and reach stability, sovereignty and prosperity without protecting the concept of a “state.”

“The committee is trying to preserve the Lebanese people’s right to resist Israel legitimately, and to ensure that no party is able to monopolize decisions of war and peace,” the statement concluded.
