Reopening of parliament welcomed

Prime Minister Fouad Siniora on Friday welcomed the return of life to the Lebanese Parliament after it was suspended for 22 months.

“The return of constitutional institutions fulfilling their roles is a good thing,” Siniora told journalists after Friday prayer.

Commenting on the accusation by former president Emile Lahoud that he wanted to remove the word Resistance from the final statement of the Sudan Summit in 2006, Siniora said he was the one who used the expression “the Resistance of Lebanon.”

“From that time and until now, I have maintained this stance and this is what we insisted on in the ministerial statement. Our stance is still the same,” Siniora said.

He also noted that he is keen to establish friendly relations between Lebanon and Syria. “I am in constant touch with President Michel Sleiman and the government in this regard,” he said.

Siniora also praised Saudi Arabia for its support in Lebanon in the past years, saying: “Among Arab states, Saudi Arabia has helped Lebanon the most.”
