Taif Agreement is reference point for Lebanese-Syrian relations
Minister of State Wael Abu Faour on Friday said that the Taif Agreement was the reference point for Lebanese-Syrian relations because it stated that Syria should not threaten Lebanon’s security and stability.
He added that the relations should not be based on enmity or subservience but only on parity, which begins with the borders’ demarcation, diplomatic exchange, recognition of Lebanon’s independency and the return of Lebanese detainees in Syrian prisons.
Faour also said that President Michel Sleiman would discuss these issues with Syrian authorities very clearly and independently. The government has the opportunity to implement the terms of the Doha Agreement, which should not be considered a temporary settlement.
He commented that it is time for all political parties to carry out their duties and solve constitutional, economic, social and institutional problems.
“The Institutions should be the governor, the constitution should be the reference and democracy should be all parties’ choice because we do not want to go back to the shameful nightmare”, Faour concluded.
