Damascus must understand that Lebanon is an independent country
Leader of the Future Movement MP Saad Hariri expressed hope that President Michel Sleiman’s coming visit to Syria would have beneficial results.
Still after a meeting with Speaker Nabih Berri and PM Fouad Siniora, discussing the Government’s victory in Tuesday’s confidence vote in parliament, Hariri said he was not yet ready to visit Syria himself.
Hariri noted that the call for establishing normal relations with Syria was not new, and said that Damascus needed to understand that Lebanon is an independent state and must be dealt with as such.
Hariri also discussed the opposition’s veto power in parliament, saying “that having obtained the power to obstruct, they are now responsible for any such obstruction.”
“The government must serve the interests of the Lebanese people. If it doesn’t it will pay the price,” Hariri said.
