Threats against majority risk entire parliament- Comparable to those faced by Former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri
Kataeb leader Amin Gemayel said on Tuesday that the parliamentary discussions of the ministerial statement earlier this month were “horrible.”
He told the Kuwaiti newspaper As-Seyassah that during the sessions, opposition MPs acted “as if they were threatening majority MPs with the same fate as Former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri,” which he considered a threat to the entire parliament.
He added that the explosion in Tripoli on August 13 was a terrorist act that is part of a frightening series of plots against Lebanon aimed at keeping the country intertwined in the regional and international conflicts.
Gemayel praised the sacrifices the March 14 alliance made to preserve the state’s role by using all means necessary to elect the president and protect the cabinet and the parliament from a party that aimed to obstruct the state’s work.
He also said that Hezbollah realized that its pretext for keeping its weapons was weak.
“Does Hezbollah want to fight UNIFIL or assault the legitimate state?” he added.
Gemayel called on Hezbollah for dialogue and openness. He said he refused to describe the party as a defender of the Lebanese state and called for adopting the Swiss model, which gives every citizen the rights of defense and resistance.
He also noted that the diplomatic exchange between Lebanon and Syria promised by the two countries’ presidents earlier this month was a positive step because it reinforced Lebanon’s sovereignty and independence.
He called on Syrian authorities to provide the United Nations with the maps and documents that prove the Shebaa Farms were Lebanese territory.
He concluded that the March 14 coalition will remain the majority, and his son, Sami Gemayel, will run for parliament during the elections in 2009.
