Geagea for Overcoming the May Wound
Head of the Lebanese Forces Executive Council Samir Geagea expressed his preference that “parliamentary elections take place by all means, even amid the armament of some political parties,” announcing that he would not run for the candidacy of the parliament.
In an interview on Future News television on Wednesday, Geagea noted that March 14 alliance “will run and win the coming parliamentary elections, despite internal debates.” He also highlighted “undoubted success for the Christians of March 14 alliance.”
Geagea described the cabinet as one of “necessity” that aims at resolving economic issues. “We will try to resolve political problems as much as possible,” he commented.
He also noted “an objective overlap of interest between Israel and Hezbollah since the former has been the only state in the world to view that the ministerial statement gave Hezbollah the solo right to defend Lebanon exactly as the latter’s MPs have been claiming (concerning the legitimacy of their weapons.)”
Geagea expressed his fear that a new civil war in Lebanon was possible after the occurrence of May 7 events and confirmed that Hezbollah could not be considered the most powerful party inside Lebanon, because “military puissance is not the means of measurement or else there would be no state,”
Geagea criticized the campaign against Prime Minister Fouad Siniora and related the upraising demands of giving the deputy PM his rights to political and electoral causes. Geagea highlighted the need to “define these rights within the constitutional framework.”
Concerning the Lebanese-Syrian summit, Geagea said that establishing diplomatic ties was “a great achievement” noting that there still was the “practical implementation.” He also refused the sustaining of the Lebanese-Syrian Higher Council. “What has been acquired under occupation cannot remain after liberation,” he commented.
“I do not feel that there is a true change in Syria’s approach toward Lebanon,” Geagea added.
Geagea noted that no practical results were achieved concerning the demarcation of the borders and requested Syria to “announce the Lebanese identity of Shebaa Farms.” He also emphasized that the majority of the Lebanese preferred resorting to the United Nations to liberate Shebaa Farms rather than military action. “It is no longer acceptable that the minority rules over the majority,” he commented.
Geagea expressed his disappointment to “find some Lebanese assisting the Syrians to escape the Lebanese detainees’ dossier”. He distinguished as well between the missing persons during the civil war and the Lebanese arrested by the Syrian authorities. He assumed that the “occupant Syrian authorities are responsible of the Syrian missing persons.”
Geagea also said, “It is unacceptable that thousands of Lebanese including Christians, Muslims and Druze remain in Israel.”
Geagea expressed his fear from the attempt to halt the national dialogue in reference to Hezbollah’ representatives recent discourse and urged President Michel Sleiman to “initiate the dialogue soon.”
