Husseini to send resignation letter to Lebanese Speaker
Former Speaker – and possibly former MP – Hussein Husseini on Thursday said he still intended to send his letter of resignation to Speaker Nabih Berri.
Husseini, who announced his resignation during the parliament’s vote on granting the cabinet confidence earlier this month, said the situation in Lebanon had reached a point “at which we no longer can keep silent… the country is on the brink of civil war at every moment.”
In an interview with the Ad-Diyar daily, Husseini said the clauses stipulated in the Doha Agreement on the return to the 1960 electoral law torpedoed the Taif Agreement and reaffirmed Lebanon as an arena of sectarian conflict.
The recent raucous around the deputy prime minister and his powers was also based on sectarian and doctrinal reactions, he added.
“The failure of the state and its institutions are what drove me to resign. If the situation is not remedied… everyone will bear the responsibility,” Husseini concluded.
