Security, Hezbollah’s weapons, and defense strategy are crucial topics
Head of the Lebanese Forces Executive Council Samir Geagea said on Saturday that there were attempts to escape the adoption of the new electoral law as it was agreed upon in the Doha settlement.
In a meeting with Lebanese from abroad at Maarab, Geagea expressed his fear that “they (in reference to Nabih Berri) rush things in such a way that they disregard the needed reforms for the electoral law.”He also emphasized that the electoral law “should be perfect.”
Geagea urged Speaker of the House Nabih Berri to order the Administration and Justice Parliamentary Committee to speed up its work although it is putting abundant efforts to add reforms to the law. He also stressed the need to discuss these reforms in the parliament.
“Instead of discussing these reforms on Tuesday’s parliamentary session, we can take our time and discuss them after two weeks,” he said.
Geagea expressed his surprise to find people discussing the rights and powers of the deputy prime minster at the time when security, Hezbollah’s weapons, and defense strategy are crucial topics.
“What can a deputy PM gain as privileges other than those gained by the deputy Speaker of the House? Where are the privileges of the latter anyway?” Geagea asked.
Geagea criticized all demands for adding new topics to the national dialogue agenda, initially put by Berri. “The defense strategy is the only remaining topic. We should also discuss who will take any strategic decisions in Lebanon.”Geagea said. He added, “Any increase in the number of participants in the dialogue aims at halting it.”
