Jumblat for Commitment to Taef and Armistice Accord
Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblat on Sunday said safeguarding the Taef Accord is a "central target of our political march regarding relations with Syria and the armistice accord."
Jumblat was referring to the 1949 armistice accord between Lebanon and Israel.
The Taef accord, which ended the Lebanese civil war, calls for commitment to the armistice accord as well as for relations of mutual respect between Lebanon and Syria.
Jumblat, during a tour of the Kharroub Province, expressed hope that the international tribunal will be operating by end of this year.
The tribunal is to try suspects in the 2005 assassination of ex-Premier Rafik Hariri and related crimes.
Jumblat explained that he had called for reconciliation in Tripoli so that clashes in the northern city would not be used as a pretext for Syrian military intervention in Lebanon.
