If we continue challenging each other we will achieve nothing

Public Works and Transport Minister Ghazi Aridi said that he hoped the appointment of a new army commander would be resolved by the end of next week, but added that the matter would depend on the credentials of the candidate presented by Defense Minister Elias al-Murr to the cabinet.

After a meeting with Prime Minister Fouad Siniora on Monday, Aridi said that there were two critical issues the adoption of a new electoral law depended on: the division of districts as agreed upon at Doha and electoral reforms.

“Since these two issues were agreed upon, the new electoral law can be adopted and we can head to normal, calm and stable elections,” Aridi said.

“If we continue challenging each other, however, we will not be able to achieve anything, either in parliament or in the cabinet. We should be aware that we have entered a new and clearer era, so let us unite to face outside dangers, especially the recent Israeli threats.”

Aridi said that Israel, along with the international community, and the United States in particular, had to understand that Lebanon is not a Petri dish, and that it “cannot but defend itself.”

“Israel and the US must handle their responsibilities, especially since the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 has been established,” Aridi said, noting that the general commander of UNIFIL has been talking about Israeli violations and threats.
