Majority won victory for Lebanon on Tuesday

Lebanese Forces MP George Adwan said that the reason the issue of electoral redistricting had been postponed in the parliamentary session on Tuesday, was because more work was needed to create a complete law.

Adwan told NOW Lebanon that the majority was committed to the agreements reached at Doha last May, concerning electoral redistricting, but he said that they wanted to address basic reforms, such as giving Lebanese living abroad the right to vote, and regulating campaign spending.

The majority won a victory for Lebanon on Tuesday, Adwan said, because it believed in democracy and the importance of Doha.

Adwan said that proper way to resolve conflicts was not by fighting in the streets, but rather by competing for the people’s support through democracy. He said the coming elections would prove a chance to choose between March 14 and March 8.

He also said that the security situation in Lebanon, particularly in Beirut and Tripoli, needed to be resolved as soon as possible. Authorities should not protect criminals, but instead should bring them to justice, Adwan said.

Adwan said that it was of critical importance that weapons be restricted to military and security forces. He said the question of Hezbollah’s arms would be discussed in the national dialogue.
