3.5 million Lebanese will get electronic voting cards

Interior Minister Ziad Baroud on Wednesday said that he was waiting for the approval of the electoral law and was preparing identity cards to give to Lebanese citizens to use during the 2009 elections.

Baroud told As-Safir newspaper that electronic cards will be provided to 3.5 million citizens, and that 700,000 voters still did not have any voting cards, which meant there was much work to be done before the elections.

He added that the electoral law should be approved by October, or else there will be a problem.

Baroud said that no Lebanese party had an interest in obstructing the law, especially the electoral redistricting as approved in the Doha Agreement.

He also said that the parliamentary elections could take place in one day so as to decrease tensions, but the issue would be studied and discussed, because, he said, there needed to be 18,000 security officers on duty that day.

He announced that the Interior Ministry was logistically ready for the Baabda elections to fill the seat of late MP Robert Ghanem and needed a normal draft signed by President Michel Sleiman, but, he added, issue was political and needed the approval of the cabinet.
