Israel will only attack Lebanon if Hezbollah gives them an excuse
In an interview with the Kuwaiti newspaper As-Siyassa on Thursday, Minister of the Environment Antoine Karam said that Israel would only attack Lebanon if Hezbollah gave them an excuse to, as was the case in the summer of 2006.
To prevent that from happening, Karam said, the Lebanese army must assert its authority throughout the country.
Karam was dismissive of Change and Reform bloc leader MP Michel Aoun‘s claim that the memorandum of understanding signed by the Free Patriotic Movement, which Aoun controls, and Hezbollah, had protected Christian areas during the May events.
Karam also said that Aoun intended to run the Change and Reform bloc’s campaign for the North-Metn district in the 2009 elections from the south, an apparent reference to Aoun’s recent tour of southern villages.
Diminished Christian representation, Karam added, was not something his party, the Lebanese Forces, would accept.
