Lebanese have single demand: A strong state
PSP Leader MP Walid Jumblatt said that the people of Lebanon have a single demand: a strong state.
The reason, Jumblatt said, is that the Lebanese have watched all other political projects fail, and thus have the condensed their demands to the state alone. Jumblatt also praised Future Leader MP Saad Hariri’s efforts in Tripoli to bring about reconciliation, and said he hoped that they would have a positive impact on the entire country.
“Let Tripoli’s reconciliation be the path that leads to the end of confrontation, let it be the beginning of a new era in which dialogue is the only way to resolve political disputes, no matter how complicated and contentious they may be,” Jumblatt told Al-Anbaa newspaper on Monday.
Jumblatt said that he supported any meeting between Hezbollah and the Future Movement, and he urged all political parties to take similar “positive steps” that would foster reconciliation. Lebanon’s leaders, Jumblatt said, must focus on the issues that unify them, rather that the disagreements that fuel conflict.
Jumblatt said that the national dialogue was critical for this process, and he called on all political parties to work on rebuilding the trust that had, in the past, been lost to heated political rhetoric, accusations of treachery and violence.
“Reviving honesty across the political spectrum is a requisite for a successful national dialogue,” he said, adding that all parties must commit to creating a positive political atmosphere.
