France Welcomes Tripoli Reconciliation, Urges State Sovereignty on all Territories
France has welcomed the Tripoli reconciliation and urged Premier Fouad Saniora”s government to impose its sovereignty on all Lebanese territories.
"France backs everyone who helps achieve security and stability in Lebanon," foreign ministry spokesman Eric Chevalier said on Tuesday.
"It is important that the Lebanese government imposes its authority on all its territories," he told a press conference.
Leaders of the various factions in the northern city of Tripoli on Monday signed a binding reconciliation document putting an end to four months of violence that killed scores of people and wounded hundreds.
Meanwhile, Elysee presidential palace Secretary General Claude Gueant met with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saudi al-Faisal.
An Nahar daily on Wednesday quoted diplomatic sources as saying that the two men discussed French President Nicolas Sarkozy”s latest visit to Damascus.
They also discussed the situation in Lebanon and the Middle East peace process.
