Parliament would Decide when Municipal Leaders Should Resign

The head of parliament”s administration and justice committee Robert Ghanem said Tuesday the house would have to settle conflicting viewpoints on the resignation of municipal heads prior to running for elections.

Ghanem, talking to reporters at the house, said the issue has not been settled. There are two views, one says heads of municipal councils should resign six months before elections and the other says they should resign two years ahead of elections.

"We would refer a copy of the election law bill to interior minister Ziad Baroud later in the day before the committee adopts it tomorrow (Wednesday)," Ghanem said.

It would be up to Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri to call for a general parliamentary session to tackle the bill, he noted.
