Syrian and Iranian Inclined Sides within Opposition

In an interview with Al-Sharq al-Awsat newspaper on Wednesday, General Coordinator of the March 14 coalition Fares Soueid said that visits by Amal and Hezbollah representatives’ to Syria this week drew attention by the fact that those visits were public after President Michel Sleiman’s official trip to Damascus in August that ended the moratorium on official contacts between the two countries.

He also noted that there were two currents within the opposition, one leaning toward Syria and the other toward Iran. “The visits were limited to the Syrian parties in the opposition,” he said.

“Is this issue related to the beginning of the contradiction of interests between Syria and some of the opposition’s parties?” he asked.

Soueid said that political sides that make visits outside the auspices of state institutions would weaken President Sleiman’s rule, adding that those twisting the facts regarding the visits aimed to harm the March 14 alliance.

He also said that the Syrian-leaning party within the opposition supported the authorities in Damascus without restrictions or conditions during its negotiations with Israel.

He added that “the radical Iranian party,” represented by MP Michel Aoun and Hezbollah, thought that the Resistance should keep its weapons even after the liberation all Lebanese occupied territories.
