Reconciliation Begins By Accepting Responsibility for Mistakes

Tripoli MP Misbah Ahdab said that Lebanon had entered a period of reconciliation, which he wished had begun earlier.

Ahdab said that dialogue within constitutional institutions, rather than armed combat, was the only way to reach agreement amid divergent political views. He said that the Lebanese must live by the results of parliamentary elections, divide power in the country. “These results must be taken into consideration and accepted by everybody,” he said.

Ahdab told journalists on Wednesday that “some say that Lebanon cannot be disarmed, but as a Lebanese citizen I demand that the Lebanese state alone possesses weapons.”

Ahdab said that reconciliation was based, first and foremost, on taking responsibility for mistakes. “We heard some apologize and this is an important step that creates a new dynamic,” Ahdab said, adding “Apology is important for overcoming the past, and preparing for the future…we have heard someone say that what happened in Beirut [last May] was an achievement and a starting point for new reconciliations…I say that what happened in Beirut was a black day, when weapons aimed against Israel were turned inward.” Ahdab said that restrictions must be put on the use of weapons during the national dialogue.
