Explosion Targeted Preserver of Peace and National Unity
PSP leader MP Walid Jumblatt said that the Monday morning explosion in Tripoli targeted the army’s role as preserver of peace and national unity.
In an interview with Al-Anbaa magazine, which will be published on Thursday, Jumblatt called for providing the army and security forces with adequate equipment, no matter where it came from, in order to prevent further incidents. He said that national security must be a priority.
Jumblatt called on all political parties to support the military and work toward national reconciliation.
Jumblatt said the proposed article in the electoral law prohibiting military officers from voting was intended to neutralize them from politically controversial issues. Jumblatt said that “those who were previously military officers should stop [attacking this law] because their pasts were less than exemplary.”
Jumblatt also condemned, despite the PSP’s stance against Syria, the Saturday explosion in Damascus. Jumblatt called on religious figures to use “rational language in order to prevent extremist reactions, which will only serve Israel’s goal of dividing the region.”
