Assad Threatens to Return to Lebanon and Confront Terrorism

Minister of Justice Ibrahim Najjar called last night on the army to deploy intensively in North Lebanon to halt tension and explosions, and to conduct operations in security zones.

In an interview with OTV on Wednesday, he said that recent blasts targeting the army were revenge attacks in the wake of the Nahr al-Bared war.

He said that no one in Lebanon wanted Syrian forces to return to the country, and that people hoped that the Syrian regime would respect Lebanese freedom and democracy, adding that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has threatened to return to Lebanon to confront terrorism.

All the evidence, he said, suggests that the Special Tribunal will be completed in 2009 and that the Lebanese Forces are keen to uncover the truth.

He said that dialogue should pave the way for building a powerful, capable and just state and that Hezbollah will not hand over their weapons because they have no confidence in the government in its current, weak, state.
