March 8 Victory in 2009 Elections Means Return of Syrian Tutelage

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea said Monday that Christian reconciliation will continue "regardless of the huge political disputes with the agenda that Gen. Michel Aoun represents."

"The real problem is on the ground with partisans of Marada Movement leader Suleiman Franjieh," Geagea said in an interview with Asharq al-Awsat newspaper.

Geagea expressed willingness to meet longtime Christian rival Franjieh, adding that he has informed the concerned officials about that and was waiting for them to set the date and time for the reunion.

He believed that a "victory" by the Hizbullah-led March 8 coalition in the 2009 parliamentary elections would mean "return of Syrian tutelage to Lebanon."

Geagea expressed fear that the March 8 alliance could "resort to violent means if it was convinced that election results were not going to be in their interest."
