A Plot Is Underway To Heighten Tensions

The National Liberal Party said that the “absence of Syrian coordination with the Lebanese cabinet” prior to the Syrian troop deployment along Lebanon’s northern border could only be explained as a “continuation of the previous Syrian approach of interference in Lebanese domestic affairs and promotion of the Iranian-Syrian axis.”

After a weekly meeting chaired by Dory Chamoun on Friday, the NLP issued a press release saying that the “disappearance of two American journalists, before their destiny was revealed and they were released in Syria, increased fears of rising instability, whether in Palestinian refugee camps or armed gangs stealing cars”

“The cabinet is supposed to legally reveal … the details surrounding the disappearance of the American journalists or at least offer clarifications through diplomatic channels to reveal it to the public opinion, and then taking measures and precautions,” the statement read.

The NLP said it was also concerned about “the return of the grenade throwing phenomenon in the area between Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen.”

The NLP said it feared a plot was underway to heighten tensions in Lebanon and impose a new list of priorities that contradicted what the Lebanese had already agreed upon.

The party also said it supported the draft law presented by Justice Minister Ibrahim Najjar to the Constitutional Council.  The NLP called for separation of powers, respect for legal authority and “consideration of the Constitutional Council as an authority to review the constitution, finalize the constitutionality of the laws, and investigate election related lawsuits.”  NLP said it was crucial to have a neutral Constitutional Council, whose members are well chosen.
