March 14 for Deploying Army Along Borders with Syria
The March 14 majority alliance on Friday said Lebanon should deploy its army along the borders with Syria in line with U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701.
The alliance also said U.N. troops should help the Lebanese Army if it felt incapable of accomplishing its mission.
The stand was outlined by March 14 coordinator Faris Soaid after meeting Premier Fouad Saniora.
He said resolution 1701 does not state that it should be implemented only by Syria. "The Lebanese side should play its role in implementing it on its territories."
He said the majority alliance does not "trust the Syrian regime”s declared intention of controlling its borders."
MP Ammar Houry, who accompanied Soaid to the meeting with Saniora, said the "coordination between the two neighborly states of Lebanon and Syria should be between the two governments … and not at any other level."
