Michael Williams in Beirut
U.N. special coordinator for Lebanon Michael Williams begins meetings with Lebanese officials this week as part of his new mission.
Williams, a Briton, arrived in Beirut on Sunday.
He replaced Belgian Johan Verbeke who was appointed U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon”s special representative in the Georgian capital after reportedly being threatened by "extreme Islamist fundamentalists."
Williams previously served as U.N. special coordinator for the Middle East peace process and played a key role in the implementation of Security Council Resolution 1701 that brought the 34-day Israel-Lebanon war to a close in 2006.
