Geagea Hopes Assad’s Decree Will Be Followed by Other Steps
Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea said that Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad’s decree to establish diplomatic relations with Lebanon should be followed “by other steps on the road toward normalizing relations” between the two countries.
After meeting with Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa in Cairo on Tuesday, Geagea said that “there are other disputed issues between the two countries.”
“Among these issues are the Lebanese detained or missing in Syria and the so-called Palestinian military bases in Lebanon,” Geagea said, “especially those present in Kousaya, Halba, Sultan Yaacoub and Naame, which are, in fact, military bases that take orders directly from the Syrian intelligence agencies.”
Geagea urged the Syrians to “demarcate the borders between Syria and Lebanon, for no real sovereignty is achieved without clear and real borders.”
Geagea said that his trip to Egypt was not a surprise visit, but had been originally scheduled for May 7th before being delayed due to the upheaval of that period.
Moussa, for his part, said he supported the diplomatic exchange between Syria and Lebanon, which he called an “important and historic step.”
