Parliamentary Elections Results Must Reflect Support for Lebanese State

March 14 general secretariat coordinator Fares Soueid said that President Michel Sleiman did not want a parliamentary bloc of his own, but one that belonged to Lebanon, which, he said, would be welcomed by all Lebanese. “It is crucial to come out of the coming parliamentary elections supporting the Lebanese state,” he said.

In an interview with Akhbar al-Yaoum news agency on Friday, Soueid said that March 14 was against expanding the number of participants in the national dialogue. “Some think that by being present at the dialogue table, they win popular and political support which enables them to win elections.” However, he added that the logic of the elections was totally different from the “theatrical” logic.

Soueid said that he hoped to overcome “the black pages of the civil war,” and that Lebanese in general and Christians in particular would do the same. “Going back to the past, accusations and counter accusations do not help Christians and Lebanese come out of the shadow of the civil war and confront the complexities of our time,” he said.
