Controversy Over The Deputy Premier”s Powers Is "Not Over."

Justice Minister Ibrahim Najjar on Sunday ruled out early intra-Christian reconciliation and said the controversy over the deputy premier”s powers is "not over."

Najjar, in a radio interview, said a compromise appears to be in the making between Premier Fouad Saniora and his deputy Issam Abu Jamra that does not require constitutional amendment.

He said Saniora has offered to Abu Jamra to review the 124 accords Lebanon has with Syria as well as to work on implementation of the cabinet”s policy statement.

Such assignments do not require constitutional amendment, Najjar explained.

He said he opposed a bill granting the constitutional council the right to interpret the constitution.

Only the house has the right to interpret the constitution, Najjar noted.
