Hezbollah Responsible For Destroying Future Movement
Former Minister Mohammed Abed al-Hamid Beydoun has held Hezbollah responsible for harming the Future Movement.
Beydoun said Speaker Nabih Berri was “no longer the main player” at this stage, but had become a spokesperson for Hezbollah.
In an interview with the Free Lebanon radio station on Saturday, Beydoun said Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah and Future bloc leader MP Saad Hariri had not talked politics at their meeting last month, which was a formality.
Beydoun told the radio station that Hezbollah was responsible for “breaking the country and destroying the Future Movement.” The former minister added that the party had lost all credibility and that any Sunni-Shia violence would destroy Lebanon as a whole.
The events of May 7 had only sharpened the need to disarm all parties outside the Lebanese army, Beydoun added, and opened the eyes of the Lebanese people to the “statelessness” of their country as the army stood by and watched armed factions fight on the streets.
Beydoun said the March 14 alliance gave “the other team everything it wanted.” The March 14 alliance had agreed to an electoral law, he explained, but their opponents had not agreed to an internal security plan.
The former minister also said he believed there were multiple attempts to besiege President Michel Sleiman, whom he said had made “successful” steps.
