Gemayel Calls for Cancellation of Higher Syrian-Lebanese Council
Kataeb leader and former Lebanese President Amin Gemayel on Tuesday reiterated his call for the cancellation of the Higher Syrian-Lebanese Council and said he hoped that reconciliation would create the appropriate atmosphere to discuss the “basic problems in which the country is mired.”
Gemayel also said that, before January 2009, it was still too soon to talk about parliamentary elections.
After meeting with the Australian and Czech ambassadors to Lebanon at his party headquarters in Saifi, Gemayel commented on Interior Minister Ziad Baroud’s visit to Syria.
“We have full confidence that Minister Baroud will not let national interests fall, and this first contact with Syria is essential, especially on the security front, in order to resolve common problems,” Gemayel said.
He concluded by saying the next step on Syrian-Lebanese coordination was in the cabinet’s hands. “Everything will be presented to the cabinet … and we will come to a final decision on the practical steps between Lebanon and Syria.”
