NDU: Student Elections Were Fair, Despite Accusations

Officials at Notre Dame University said they were disappointed by some of the reactions to Friday’s student elections.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, NDU congratulated students on all sides for the competitive spirit, free of chaos and animosity, demonstrated in the elections. The university said it was normal in student elections for some to feel unsatisfied by their showing in the vote.

“The university’s administration supervised the students’ elections and it is impossible to doubt the results,” NDU said, “The adopted electoral law was based on faculties not years. It is used in most universities in Lebanon and it is applicable to all students without exception and there is no excuse to say that it was in the interest of one group. The increase in the number of sophomore students is an honor to the university and a proof on the high standard education in the institution and it is disappointing that some attribute it to non educational reasons.”

The statement also said that a supervising committee had monitored the results, and it pointed to the statements of some student supporters of the losing factions in Friday’s vote, who nevertheless said they respected those who supervised the elections, which they felt had been fair.

NDU said it had banned all political advertising from the campus, and had conducted the election under the motto, “Yes for students’ elections, no for political elections.” The university added that the administration was removed from politics, and regretted the attempts of some indicate otherwise.
