Documents and Confessions Should Be In the Hands of an Arab Investigating Committee

March 14 coalition general coordinator, Fares Soueid, said that after reports published by As-Safir and Al-Akhbar dailies regarding the Lebanese security services’ investigation into recently captured terrorist cells, the Al-Mustaqbal daily reported on Saturday that the Syrian regime was directly connected with the extremist organization Fatah al-Islam.

After meeting with Future Movement leader MP Saad Hariri in Qoreitem on Saturday, Soueid said that they considered the recent confessions broadcast on Syrian state television to be “forged.” In a parallel development, he noted that authentic documents were in the hands of the Lebanese judicial system, which he said revealed the truth about Fatah al-Islam, and he called for the issue to be made public by the justice minister or the Lebanese cabinet.

“Why don’t we put the documents and confessions in the hands of an Arab investigating committee?” Soueid asked.

Soueid said that Syria currently held the leadership of the Arab League, with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad the league’s current president. He said there was a Lebanese and Arab faction called the Future Movement that requested an Arab investigation, and he called on the Arab League to reveal the truth about Fatah al-Islam.

Soueid added that “an investigation is much better than having the Lebanese live in a series of responses.”

“Assad has an interest in calling for an Arab investigating committee, and for putting the documents and confessions in its hands, and then letting it judge,” he said.
