No Objection on Visiting Syria Once Disputed Issues Are Resolved
Environment Minister Antoine Karam said that the cabinet did not spend much time discussing the Syrian television confessions. He said that President Michel Sleiman and Prime Minister Fouad Siniora were aware of the details of Interior Minister Ziad Baroud’s visit to Damascus and, accordingly, the issue was not disputed in the meeting.
In an interview with ANB television on Saturday, Karam said that he did not oppose visiting Syria if invited by his Syrian counterpart, after resolving all disputed issues between both countries. Karam said that Change and Reform bloc leader MP Michel Aoun makes such decisions. However, he said things should happen gradually.
Karam said that the Syrian allegations against the Future movement of supporting Fatah al-Islam should be put in the hands of the international tribunal to give the final word on this issue.
About Christian reconciliation, Karam said that Lebanese Forces was ready to complete it, particularly given that it would cool the atmosphere before the elections. Karam rejected the claim that LF wants reconciliation for electoral goals. “Will the supporters of [Marada leader and Former] Minister Sleiman Franjieh vote for LF if reconciliation is achieved?” he asked.
