Israel is Forced to Leave Ghajar in Accordance with 1701
UNIFIL spokeswoman Yasmina Bouziane affirmed on Thursday that Israel is forced to withdraw from the southern village of Ghajar in accordance with U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701.
Bouziane”s statement came in response to media reports about Israel”s intention to conduct talks with the United Nations over a possible pullout from the northern part of the village.
UNIFIL has presented a proposal to all parties to facilitate the withdrawal of Israeli forces from northern Ghajar and discussions are ongoing over this issue from the time the proposal was made, Bouziane said.
There are no new developments on the issue at the moment, she added.
An official Lebanese source told As Safir daily on Thursday that the Israeli government”s decision to pull out from the northern part of Ghajar and place it under UNIFIL auspices came as a result of intensive Lebanese diplomatic efforts over two years.
As-Safir said that Lebanese army representative at the Lebanese-Israeli-U.N. meetings Brig. Gen. Abdul Rahman Shuhaitli, has informed the Israeli side at a meeting in Naqoura last week that if the northern part of Ghajar was not placed under U.N. auspices by Nov. 22, the Lebanese government will cancel all approved measures on Ghajar.
Lebanon has squeezed the Israeli government and quickened the pullout, the source said.
