NLP Calls for Arab Committee to Investigate Media Leaks
The National Liberal Party called on the Arab League to form a committee to scrutinize media leaks that aimed to manipulate legal investigations into the “crimes” of the militant group Fatah al-Islam, and in so doing extract revenge against Lebanon’s cabinet and sovereignty-supporting parties.
After its weekly meeting on Friday, the NLP released a statement accusing Syrian intelligence services of creating Fatah al-Islam in order to destroy Lebanon.
The statement asserted that United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s report on the implementation of the UNSCR 1701 validated the people of Lebanon’s concerns about a number of issues, including the ongoing flow of arms over the borders, the presence of factions operating beyond the authority of the state, Palestinian weapons inside and outside of the refugee camps and those belonging to Hezbollah, which, the party said, was in violation of UNSCRs 1559 and 1701.
The NLP, citing Independence Day, called on the people of Lebanon to support the state’s institutions and the government to assert its authority throughout the country. The party added that independence could not be complete until all the Lebanese detainees in Syrian prisons were released and the fate of missing persons was revealed.
