Aoun’s Imminent Visit to Syria Questionable

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea said that while every leader had the right to stake out their own position, he wished that Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun “had taken into consideration the feelings of many Lebanese, the parents of the detainees in Syrian prisons and all the martyrs.”

After meeting with a delegation from Zgharta on Thursday, Geagea questioned the timing of Aoun’s expected visit to Damascus, as there remained unresolved issues between the two countries. He said that the appropriate visits were those undertaken in pursuit of resolving existing problems.

“We hope solutions are found, so that Lebanese-Syrian relations between the two countries return to normal,” Geagea said.

Asked about the possible gifts Aoun could receive from his visit, such the release of some detainees or the inauguration of a new church in Syria, Geagea said, “I think that…a new church in Syria does not require the visit of a Lebanese politician.” He added that he hoped the issue would not be politically exploited for any reason, because such visits in the run-up to the parliamentary elections raised many questions in the minds of the Lebanese people.
