Kataeb Not Surprised By Harsh Reactions to Gemayel Speech
The Kataeb Party said it was relieved by the enduring international support for Lebanese issues, and specifically by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s announcement that the Special Tribunal to try suspects in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri would begin proceedings in March 2009.
In a statement issued after the weekly meeting of Kataeb’s political office on Monday, the party expressed concern over clashes in the nation’s private and public universities.
The party also said that “harsh responses” to Kataeb leader Amin Gemayel’s most recent speech, during the Kataeb event in November commemorating the party’s founding and the two year anniversary of Pierre Gemayel’s assassination, were to be expected considering the political divide in Lebanon between those who supported sovereignty and those who favored “subordination.”
