Checchia Hopes Violence Won’t Mar 09 Elections
Italian Ambassador Gabriele Checchia said he hoped that the 2009 parliamentary elections would take place democratically and without any violence.
During a meeting with the Grand Mufti of the Lebanese Republic Sheikh Mohammad Rashid Qabbani on Wednesday, Checchia said that Lebanon was witnessing a period of stability and that state institutions had become active since the Doha Agreement in May, despite the remaining difficulties at the domestic and regional level.
He added that Italy trusted the people of Lebanon, and was confident that their state and democracy would endure.
