Calls for Amending Taif Are Dangerous
Former Prime Minister Najib Mikati criticized Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun’s recent comments about amending the Taif Accord.
During Aoun’s visit to Syria last week he said that he hoped to win a majority in the 2009 parliamentary elections so that the Taif Accord could be amended.
Mikati said that “the latest calls for the amendment of the Taif Accord are so dangerous because they harm the constitution, which is the last fortress for the defense of Lebanon.”
“General Aoun has forgotten that decisive national issues cannot be handled from a majority/minority point of view, and instead demand national consensus in order for them to be resolved,” Mikati said. He added that “certainly, there is a need to develop Taif because of the gaps that were revealed upon its partial implementation.”
Mikati then called for the full implementation of the Taif Accord in order to reveal the “real gaps and then carry out the necessary amendments.”
