Russian-Syrian Relations Not at Lebanon Expense
Russian ambassador to Lebanon Sergie Poukin said Saturday that Russian-Syrian relations will "never be at the expense of Lebanon”s sovereignty, independence or national interests."
In remarks published by the daily Al Mustaqbal, Poukin stressed that he stands at an equal distance from all Lebanese parties.
Poukin expressed Moscow”s interest in Lebanese parliamentary elections as well as the debate over the defense strategy "away from political pressure."
He also voiced clear support for the international tribunal to try suspects in the assassination of ex-Premier Rafik Hariri and related crimes.
Poukin said Moscow also supports the Lebanese army as well as implementation of U.N. resolutions, including 1701, which requires that only the regular Lebanese army can bear arms.
