Reassess Prison Sentences Handed Down Under Occupation
Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Sfeir said that there were voices calling for legal verdicts issued against citizens during the period of occupation to be reconsidered.
During Sunday morning mass in Bkerki, Sfeir said that prison sentences from that period had a “doubtful” legitimacy. “They should be reconsidered in order to provide relief for those against whom they were issued and so their families can return to normal life, away from unfairness,” he said.
Sfeir said that many countries reevaluated sentences after a period of occupation, such as France after it was liberated from the Nazis. Sfeir said he hoped his demand would be realized.
