Syrian-Iranian Axis Illustrate a Lebanon Unable Of Self-Government
March 14 General Secretariat member Michel Mouawad said that a decisive battle, which will be played out during the parliamentary elections, was approaching.
Speaking to the Free Lebanon radio station on Sunday, Mouawad said, “There is an attempt by the Syrian-Iranian axis and its allies, whom [Free Patriotic Movement leader MP] General Michel Aoun has joined, to return Lebanon to what it was before 2005, in order to say that Lebanon is incapable of ruling itself.”
Mouawad said that Aoun had not maintained a steady opinion or position on any issue since 2005, including whether Syria was behind the recent series of assassinations or on the issue of Hezbollah’s weapons.
He added that Aoun had joined the Syrian-Iranian axis and become allied with the Syrian regime.
“The Syrian regime gave nothing to Aoun and welcoming him was a formality. The visit flattered Aoun in style, so that the Syrian regime could undermine Aoun’s substance so that he becomes a defender of the Syrian regime and its interests,” he noted.
Mouawad said that the upcoming electoral battle would take place across Lebanese territory and would not be embodied by private disputes, like that in Zgharta involving Marada Movement leader Sleiman Franjieh.
“We will accept the results of the upcoming parliamentary elections,” he said.
