Election Monitoring Committee Appointments Concerning
Former Prime Minister Najib Mikati has raised concerns on appointments to the Election Monitoring Committee.
In a statement on Monday, Mikati expressed fears that the appointment of members to the committee last Saturday would taint the appointment of additional members to other administrative committees and further exacerbate the paralysis and lack of productivity of the state.
Mikati wished the electoral committee luck, but said he feared its establishment under political quotas would undermine its credibility and impartiality.
Mikati also said he regretted “the logic of using the renewed threat of majority and minority and the obstructing third in the cabinet in light of the sharp political division in which we live” and called for “sincere consensus among officials to ensure the interests of the people and the public are served.”
“The Taif Agreement,” the former PM added, “stipulates that decisions be made by consensus in the cabinet.”
